I'd say that's its main downfall if duplex printing is something you frequently do. If you don't, then this machine is really impressive in all other respects. I agree with the other reviewer that the color is a little off, but for color copies it's fine. It's a big beast of a machine so you better have space for it. You can connect it directly to a computer via USB, or network it either wired or wireless. I connected with a USB cable (not included but it's a standard USB printer cable and I had one around) and installation was very easy. I quickly had this set as the default printer and then shared it on my network. Printing was fast and the print quality is impressive. In particular, the lines on black letters were noticeably crisp and sharp.

The addition of a sheet feeder for the copier/scanner/fax makes this a really useful small office all in one machine. If you've got a lot of copies to make, stack 'em up and let 'em rip. For single copies you open the lid and set them on the glass. Either way it's easy to choose color or black and white on the control panel.

The fax feature allows you to share a phone line with your telephone, in which case you can use distinctive ring to let the fax machine know when to pick up and when not to. If you don't have distinctive ring, you can just set it so you manually answer the phone with the fax machine to avoid people having conversation with that screeching fax machine sound. You can fax from your computer or the machine.

All in all I was impressed with this machine. Again, if printing duplex (both sides) is a common task for you, I'd look for another machine. Otherwise, if you want an all in one that's easy to set up and use, you should consider this machine. I barely read the manual and had it up and running in no time. It took me about 30 seconds to teach my wife how to use it. I agree the instructions for wireless set up are a bit techy, but that's the nature of wireless. I've had the unit for a week and am running it under Windows 7 64-bit. Software installation was event-free. The only issue so far is with my nVidia 9600 GT display card which locks up but recovers in an instant when going to a second page in Print Preview mode.

Print quality is up to Epson's standards (extremely high) for this class. Duplex printing works well but scanning is an issue for office-type uses. It scans (simplex mode only, no duplex scanning!) only to jpg or other photo-type formats, not to pdf or doc types. Every page shows up as a separate image. Quality-wise, scanning is very good.

Cartridge costs are OK, cheaper than my previous Canon MP830. I like the fact that the ink cartridges are fixed and connected to the printhead by tubing. Much less mass to move but initially requires some ink to prime the tubing. Full cartridges are supplied with the unit as well as an extra black one.

Size is quite small, made so by the elimination of the duplex scanning unit I suppose. The print duplexer does protrude from the rear by 3 inches. Noise is extremely low for the scanner but only average for the printer. Paper tray is clever in that it can hold both photo and plain paper.

I had returned an Epson V500 scanner that pooped out on me after two scans, and decided to try this Canon scanner instead. I was a little bit leery of trying Canon, due to an inkjet printer that I owned long ago that died within a few months. But so far this scanner has been very good.

The LiDE 700F is fairly small, so it will fit in a smaller area. It opens on the side. It was very easy to install, and it scans much faster than my old scanner (a 7-year old HP Scanjet). I'm using it basically to scan sketches in, and it does this very well. The scans look great! Please note that this scanner does not come with a slide adapter, it has some cheesy little adapter for scanning negative film strips, but I have not tried that function. I just bought it to scan documents and actual artworks on paper, so that's all I'm reviewing here.

There are only two little problems with this scanner, both of them related to the software. The first problem is that I find the software that Canon includes to be cumbersome, over-complicated and not very intuitive. Windows pop up that I'm not expecting to pop up, and it's just not a super-easy experience. I am still getting used to it, though, so it could just be me. The other problem is that there are buttons on the front of the scanner, but I can't figure out how to get the "scan" button to open the Canon scanner software, instead it opens the default Image Capture program on my Mac. Again, this is probably just me, but I do wish that Canon would provide more help and detailed instructions on how to use the software.

However, when I received the 2 HP 15A ink cartridges that I ordered for my laser printer although they were both new, the cartridges bore expiration dates that had long past and there was no indication on the web site that the price was a reflection that these cartridges were expired. I returned both of them and requested a refund. I no longer feel confident in ordering cartridges from Amazon since there is no way of knowing whether I will receive expired or current cartridges. (To be fair I should note that this order had also included Epson ink cartridges for my other printer and these cartridges were received in good order and had not expired).

In future I would suggest that Amazon should either state the expiration date of their cartridges, give the assurance that they are not expired, or alternatively indicate that the price has been significantly adjusted because the cartridge has expired.
